Remember this picture I took and posted a while back, earlier in this thread? Here's what happened to it a couple of days ago...

Not in flying order anymore. RIP, 5 crew.

Saw that. I was kind of amazed that 1 of the crew survived. It actually got airborne and maybe 100 feet or more off the ground before it rolled over and went down for good. Some trees blocked the final moments on the video I saw, but it looked more than violent enough.

What's really outrageous is that there's another video of the same jet at the same airfield having very nearly as much trouble getting off the ground. It cleared the perimeter fence by like 10 feet or less. How the hell do you go through that and not completely flip out with making sure it never, ever happened again?

Edit: Here's that video:

Goodness...

It's a fine observation - and question, pyro. In part, it was a disaster waiting to happen. Take a look at some data regarding the airport, Puerto Carreño, near the Orinoco river...

Short, narrow. I had written some more thoughts, but I hit back space to here. Much as I'd like to go into conjecture at this point, it isn't my place to do so.

Indeed, amazing that there was a survivor. Thanks for sharing that second video!

Some photos (apologizes for the potato quality on some) I grabbed from last summer - for Fleet Week in Baltimore the Air Show portion stages at the air field where my office is located.

F/A-18 - they actually bent the frame on the #4 bird during the air show and it had to sit at the airfield before being trucked out.

This is an actual NLG tire from an SR-71. Found this at a vendor booth from the company that used to make them at a C-130 conference in Atlanta.

FA-50 - From a model display I came across on a ROKAF Airbase in Korea.

Thanks guys,
Getting good lighting is the real challenge as some of the venues don't have good show locations for afternoon flying and when the flying starts at noon all of the flying shots are backlit by the sun. When photographing the aircraft I always try to have the sun at my back for the best lighting possible. Davis-Monthan is particularly bad as you are facing south with the sun in front of you for the whole show. China Lake here started the flying display at noon so I had to find a good spot well south of show center to get decent photos. For these types of shows, most of the photos have to be run through photoshop to clean them up a bit for presentation.
